Easy way: create a "disk file" instead (2008-09-13 19:37) |

So apparently, ACS looks for the disk file "on the same disk" first. You can create this file in advance and save yourself some time and effort. Just create a blank text file in the same directory as the game. Name it "ADVEN.HRD" . ACS will recognize this as your game disk, and will overwrite it with the "Rivers of Light" or "Land of Aventuria" game disks, whichever you elect to create. |

My previous post made much more sense before the carriage returns were stripped out. :) But look up info on the SUBST command and what I'm doing should make sense. |

Disk-swapping method that works in Windows (2008-01-26 23:26) |

There's an easier way than the USB device, floppy drive, or virtual PC, at least in Windows: use the SUBST command. For example, say you have your ACS program in (Windows path) C:ACS and your adventure disk in C:ACS-disk:
(In Windows command prompt, before running DosBox)
subst x: c:acs
(in DosBox, to run ACS)
mount a x:
a:
acs
(In Windows, when it's time to switch disks)
subst x: /d
subst x: c:acs-disk
(and to switch back)
subst x: /d
subst x: c:acs
You may want to make batch files to do this, as certain operations require switching back and forth frequently. Hope this helps! |

Solution with Virtual PC (2008-01-18 09:45) |

You can use virtual PC software such as VMware or MS Virtual PC and install dosbox on an OS inside a virtual machine. Then use the Virtual PC's floppy drive to swap your disks. Use WinImage or a similar program to create your 1.44MB floppys, but just be sure to save it as an *.ima file and not *.imz, etc.

USB Swapping! (2007-09-16 10:54) |

emase is entirely right, but I found a working solution that I've tested and confirmed. We don't have a physical disk to swap in and out, but if you have two USB keychain drives, they work just as well.
Example:
USB Drive 1: make a folder with game files (i.e. e:\acs)
USB Drive 2: make an empty folder with same name (i.e. e:\acs)
Put in the usb drive with the game files, fire up dosbox, and:
> mount a e:\acs
when you need to make a adventure disk, you can just swap your usb drives in an out like you would have with the floppies.
Works perfectly, tested, played and saved.

Disk Swapping (2007-06-19 16:13) |

You can't get around the disk swap requirement by moving the files because, by running acs.com, the OS locks that file (ie can't move it).
It'd be nice if you could mount several directories and swap between them like this:
mount a c:\game_disk c:\save_disk1 c:\save_disk2
and pressing ctrl+F4 would swap between game_disk, save_disk1, and save_disk2 |

DB 0.70 - 300 cycles (2007-03-05 01:47) |

I believe you can get around that by mounting a folder as A: drive, and then removing the data from that folder each time and naming it "disk1" etc. |

The game seems to run flawlessly, and even too fast (had to reduce my CPU cycles to 250). However, it is unplayable on a machine that does not have a physical floppy (i.e. a laptop). The game needs the user to swap disks and there is not (to my knowledge) a mechanism in DOSBOX to do this with a mounted directory.
Thus, since you can't create "adventure disks", you can't play the game. |
