Cannot get it to work in 0.73 (2009-08-13 17:56)

Have installed from XP, have installed from DOSbox 0.73 and have sound problems. Either I don't get speech or music, or when the conversation screen comes up and digitized speech should happen, the game crashes.
The game intro and character set up works fine and the digitized sound effects work on the character build screen, but I have never heard music - ever. I have tried 0.72-0.65 as well, and no joy. I don't understand why this title is all green, as it is the first DOS game I have not been able to get running in DOSBox!
Works decently in 0.73 (2009-07-06 23:59)

Installed from CD + 1.5 patch under DOSBox 0.73, selected Bypass option. Got a warning about not enough memory detected (31M+Swap) even with memsize=63, but the same seems to run. Level and dialogue loading time was terribly slow even after following instructions on the UESP wiki to copy game files to the HDD. Eventually I made a BIN/CUE (not ISO because of the audio tracks) image of the CD and imgmount'ed it in DOSBox and the game runs quite well. I have to run with the "Low" resolution setting though because the framerate is a tad too low if I choose "High".

Battlespire works fine but do mind that this was a very late DOS game and required a Pentium at the very least. As a result, it will be unplayable on slower computers. On my Conroe E6600 it's just about playable with turning down any of the details.
Runs in DOSBox v0.65 (2006-04-12 21:54)
DisChaotica
It's very, very, very slow but Battlespire finally runs in DOSBox v0.65. I had to use the "-freesize 500" parameter when I mounted the c-drive. Also, Setsound crashed DOSBox when it tried to autodetect an AWE64 (use Soundblaster) Otherwise, the install went without a hitch. You can play the game in SVGA; create a character works, and you can get into the game itself. But it is very slow (1FPS), so its not really playable yet.

The game exits with the error message:
"Could not initialize VESA 15 bit 640x480 mode."
Game includes UniVBE and a config option to add or remove it in the batch file (this is the 'normal' and 'bypass' mentioned by Jareth above); same error results either way.
Note that running directly under XP, the above error occurs with 'bypass,' but with 'normal' the error changes to "Unable to install or detect VBE 2.0..."

Game wouldn't run, tried using with both normal and bypass on the video choices.
