How to install and run the game 10/5/2020 (2020-05-10 07:36) |

|
|
|
Download the two cd.iso files from CnCNet or other source. CnCNet are trying to push their own software that can take care of the installation for you, but they also offer the iso image files which is what you need. https://cnc-comm.com/red-alert/downloads/the-game (Downloads from other sources that are about 50Mb might be playable but will not include the videos, which really detracts from the experience.)
On dosbox do:
Z:>mount c "some folder to hold your ra files"
Z:>imgmount d "path-to-the-ISO.iso" -t iso
then c:your folderinstall
followed by c:your folderrungame
Make sure you have mounted cd1 if you want to play the Allies campaign and cd2 if you want to play the russian. |

Setup first complained that SETUP.MIX was missing, because I didn't mount with "-t cdrom". After I mounted with "mount d: /volumes/cd1 -t cdrom", install runs, but hangs at the end. If I try and run red alert, it tells me "please insert a red alert CD into the cd-rom drive". Mounting with a label like tib suggested, still does not make it work. Any ideas? |

Many thanks MiniMax, that tutorial works perfectly!
Also, it was mentioned earlier by someone that one should use memsize=64, this will not work, the maximum option is memsize=63, because 1 MB is already allocated as lowmem, and total memory must not exceed 64 MB, so memsize=63 is the right option. And if you have problems with sound skipping increase the prebuffer option under mixer, that usually helps. |

Works fine in 0.72 (with a little tweaking) - continued (2008-09-01 07:58) |

D:\>C:
C:\>cd \Westwood\RedAlert
C:\>copy D:\Patch\*.* C:
Tweak no. 2: The patch process will run really slow with core=normal and cycles=auto, so we speed it up by forcing the use of the dynamic core, and put it at full speed:
C:\>core=dynamic
C:\>cycles=max
C:\>patch
Almost done now! All that is needed before we can run the game, is to reset to core and cycles values to auto:
C:>core=auto
C:\>cycles=auto
C:\>RA |

Not much to it really. EA released Red Alert as a free download. Grab the RAR-file and unpack it with something like WinRAR or 7-Zip. Next, create a folder where you want to install Red Alert, and mount that and the ISO-file in DOSBox:
Z:\>mount C "path-to-your-RA-folder"
Z:\>mount D "path-to-the-ISO.iso" -t iso
Tweak no. 1: The installer do not like the dynamic core (it will hang at the end of the install), so it should be run with the normal core:
Z:\>D:
D:\>core=normal
D:\>setup
Next, you need to install the 1.08PE patch: |

I just spent a good while trying to get the new free release of the game from EA working, only to be stopped by the SETUP.MIX error above. Finally resolved this by mounting it to the D: drive in DOSBox (didn't work with any other letter). |

I get a DOS4GW general page fault when I try to start the game.
Installation & setup work fine.
Same goes for Command & Conquer. |

If Red Alert asks you for the CD (tells you it couldn't find SETUP.MIX) remember to mount the CD contents/the actual CD as a cdrom, e.g.:
mount d /cdrom -t cdrom
(example from my own setup on linux) |
