Playable but need tweaks under Linux (2017-02-25 01:08) |

So the game is actually very well playable, but not from the first run (seg fault) under Linux.
In order to fix it, you need to change the dosbox settings. Go to your home folder (~), into the hidden folder called '.dosbox', so: cd ~/.dosbox. here you find the dosbox-VERSION.conf file. Look for "core=auto" line and replace it by: "core=normal". Save the file and restart dosbox. This will solve the crash. |

Death Rally runs great, these are the particular settings I use to get it running smoothly, with no annoying sound skips:
memsize=63
machine=svga_s3
core=auto
cycles=auto
type=auto
rate=44100
blocksize=1024
prebuffer=30 <- Very Important!
output=ddraw
vsyncmode=on
vsyncrate=75 <- My monitor's refresh rate
fullresolution=640x480 <- Death Rally's native resolution for the menu, gameplay resolution is 320x200
fulldouble=0
xms=1
ems=1
umb=1
aspect=1
scaler=normal2x
videoram=2048 <- i didn't set this, but it works fine so just don't touch it
svgachipset=3s
Good luck! |

The game crashes (segmentation fault) when the level is being load - I'm able to start the game, choose the character / car and when I start the race it crashes. Pity...
Cheers! |

Runs perfect in 0.72 (2007-09-21 19:23) |

Using version 0.72 in Windows 2000, processor Celeron D 320 (single core) with a NVidia 440MX video card, it works. I am using the full registered version of Death Rally, full-screen, with ddraw and hq3x as scaler, sound as GUS. The /w flag for the rally makes no difference. The only glitch is the intro cinematic, which shows some color boxes with some scalers but not with others. Also tested with a faster AMD dual-core machine (3800, NVidia FX5200); it works great in it too, althought DOSBOX seems to be using only one core.

Runs GREAT on 0.7 (OSX) (2007-06-28 19:11) |

I had previously tried to run this game on 0.63 (Ubuntu, P4/512MB) and 0.65 (OSX Macbook Pro C2D/2GB). In both cases it was hard to get decent performance even with endless manual tweaking. With 0.7 and "auto" cycles and core, it works GREAT. Very smooth and playable. |

/w dosnt work (2007-06-02 10:26) |

Well I used the /w flag and it just sits there saying "Loading music & effects please wait.." But besides that the graphics work and is smooth. |

Runs fine on 0.65 (2007-05-27 20:57) |

The game appears to run correctly even on 0.65.
Setup here is: AMD Athlon64 3000+ Socket 939, VIA-based motherboard, Kubuntu 6.06.1.
Windowed or full screen, no problems. Sound and music on. The sweetspot for CPU cycles, at least for this particular system, seems to be between 19200 and 19600, anything above this causes sound stuttering. I couldn't get the intro video to play correctly, regardless of the CPU cycles or options in the conf file. Minor bug, of couse, maybe 0.70 fixes it. Gameplay is as good as it could be (reminds me of my Pentium 100). |

To enjoy smooth sounf and gameplay you have to set
vsyncmode=on and vsyncrate=##
## - the number must corespond with your display refresh rate |

Runs perfect without sound, but you can't balance between sound and gameplay unless you got a very fast computer. |

It works, heres how (2003-10-26 17:20) |

just make sure you append '/w flag' to rally.exe that way it can even work without DosBox and the race itself wont be jerky anymore. |
