It works great on Linux Mint 18.1 (2017-09-15 23:01) |

Ianski, are you running JEMMEX inside DosBox or before it? You are supposed to run it inside DosBox.
I am usind Linux Mint 18.1 (based on Ubuntu) and it works great using the patch (Martin Kiewitz's HOLMES FiX patch), then copying the JEMM folder inside the HOLMES folder. Then, set XMS, EMS and UMB to FALSE in your dosbox .conf file.
For me, it worked setting the game to Sound Blaster (both music and FX) and "do not use EMS".
Then, all I had to do was running the JEMMEX LOAD and HOLMES.BAT and that was it... I had FX and music without crashing. |

JEMMEX LOAD on Dosbox on Ubuntu crashes (2017-03-25 06:20) |

Following instructions left by others (fixing the conf file to disable memory, applying holmesfix, and installing jemm) worked great on my windows 7 box, but doesn't seem to work on my Ubuntu linux box - Jemmex Load crashes the dosbox on execution. The error is:
Exit to error: DRC64:Unhandled memory reference
Any thoughts on how to fix this? I can get the game to run by using GAME.EXE to bypass the scene with the cat, but then I only get music, no sound effects. |

Lost Files of Sherlock Holmes - The Case of the Rose Tattoo
You should select the correct midi/sound device. Even if the setup program responds okay inside the program the music/sound can be disabled. This setup is working for me:
MIDI music: Sound Blaster Pro (new Version)
Digital audio: Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32
If you can't save (Error 1, not enough disk space) take a look to the game directory. If a save game is present (HOLMES2.SAV) remove it. Now you should be able to load/save.
Test period: 20 Minutes
Win 7-64 Home Premium
Intel i5 M430, 4GB RAM

Hi,
I forgot to mention one important detail.
In order my previous dma segbound solution to work with this game, you need to apply the Martin Kiewitz's HOLMESFiX patch.
Without the patch the game cannot detect and run correctly.
You can find it already in game files, hosted in old game sites, hosting zipped versions.
For the original iso owners, you need to apply mentioned patch. |

solved dma segbound wrapping problem (2015-08-02 17:36) |

Hi,
I can confirm a solution for dma segbound wrapping error, which is driving people mad.
You will need JEMM memory manager. Here is the link.
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/emm386/jemm386/JEMM578B.zip
Dosbox options set as follows:
xms=false
ems=false
umb=false
Copy the jemm files into the root folder of your mounted C drive.
Run dosbox
Mount your drive in dosbox
Type following command:
JEMMEX LOAD
Run the game...
For best experience I advise selecting Roland MT32 for music and sound blaster for digital audio using install.exe in game folder.
I have tested this in Win 7 64 bit.
Enjoy this masterpiece...

freeze on DOSBox 0.74 (2013-03-23 05:16) |

If the music turned on my version freezes when I leave the home of Holmes and he and Watson arrive to the street at the start of the game.
It doesn't matter which sound card I chose.
The DOSBox status window gives me this error:
Exit to error: DMA segbound wrapping (read) |

The crash on the intro when the cat drops the bottle can be skipped by running GAME.EXE directly or disabling digital sound until you've seen it at least once. But the same error occurs again at different points later on, so be sure to save often.

Works with or without expanded memory.
Voices are OK. What you'd expect from 27MB game.
Had to hack the HOLMES.BAT file a bit. Here's what works for me:

Sorry for wrong settings: You can use Extended memory or not, and every Soundcard setting. Just ignore the Message of "Can't run driver for some reason" or similar. If it prints out some RAM stats, just type in "MEM" and enter, and start GAME.EXE then it'll run.
Version is 0.61
Have fun!

German Version, working very good, i give it 98%, no special settings needed, _BUT_ TURN OFF! Expanded Memory use in setup/install. Voices are bad quality, but seems original.
