If the game freezes on any skill increase (e.g. Axe skill +1), it is probably a sound-related issue. I found two solutions (using DOSBox 0.73):
1) Be sure the game sound settings (setup by "SETD.EXE") match those set on DOSBox (in my case, SoundBlaster IRQ was different)
2) Disable sounds at all ;)
You can also disable XMS, but then the game will complain about not having sufficient memory and it will automatically disable sounds, so the result it's like solution n.2
