Runs better than on native hardware (2010-08-15 02:11)

Besides incompatibility with EMS drivers (due to using a "flat memory" system), WoE is extremely persnickety about the machine it is run on. I only ever got it to work with sound and music on period hardware once. Tried at least six other similar-era machines of various models; most of the time it locked up before even getting to the menu.
Dosbox runs it perfectly with a couple easy .conf tweaks, but needs plenty of host CPU power. Speaking from experience I would recommend a good brand 700 Mhz processor at the *bare minimum* to run WoE at acceptable speeds. And that's if no other programs are running, not even in the background.

If you can get it to run under DOSBox, it actually runs (amazingly enough) better than in real DOS, because the sound effects and music play perfectly; I could never get sound effects even with a real Sound Blaster in real DOS mode. Everything works perfectly.
Because the game requires there to be no EMS, it will not run in DOSBox under Windows 98 due to the DOSBox EMS bug in Win98 that dynamically creates 1MB of EMS if you switch away from drive Z:. You'll need to run DOSBox under XP to get Wrath to run.

Produced by Addix, not Softkey (they published it); Wrath of Earth works flawlessly under 0.61. EMS absolutely MUST be disabled, but once done, adlib & sb sound worked, fmv, speech, sfx and music were fine. In-game was very slow however - needs lots of cycles. Still, it's wonderful that this underdog FPS masterpiece now works under DOSBox!
